Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
