Individuals who experienced sexual abuse by church officials have expressed fresh optimism following their first meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, who leads the anti-abuse organization, stated that the Pope's choice to meet with them so early in his papacy sent a strong message about his commitment to addressing the issue.

Global Strict Policy Pushed

The organization is pushing for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any priest who confesses to or is proven of sexually abusing a minor. This policy has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is resistance," they remarked.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in spring, has inherited this persistent issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to address the problem included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the Church and changes to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For Hickey, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the measure is deeply meaningful. The Canadian activist revealed they were victimized by a priest who was later moved between various churches.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we aim to work with him," Hickey stated. "Both sides share the common objective, we seek to eliminate clergy abuse."

Significant Meeting

Seven representatives of the coalition, which includes survivors and supporters from over thirty nations, met with the Pontiff in his Vatican office.

The discussion, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was characterized as "very understanding" when listening to the account of a woman abused at a Catholic residential school for Indigenous children in North America.

Hickey added the leader was "tender" about their own experience and seemed "very humble, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was genuine, realistic, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is hoping that changes to canon law will enable the implementation of the strict approach worldwide.

They have spoken with experts and compiled materials that they will present to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in looking at it," they noted.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent Vatican-commissioned report emphasized the "necessity of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or removal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The document also pointed out that survivors repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for church leaders and senior officials to be made responsible for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

The representative revealed they told the pontiff at the beginning of their meeting: "This represents as much a risk for him to participate in a conversation as it was for us."

After the meeting, Hickey expressed hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and establishing a relationship and continuing to build that bond is a step in the correct path," they stated.

They concluded that they shared with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can alter how the narrative ends - he valued that."
