Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
